One-on-one
assistance by trained volunteer attendants 24-hours a day, or as
needed.
Each
disabled adult is assigned a volunteer whose sole purpose is to help
take care of that one adult. Although there is a lot of cooperation,
the fact that volunteers are assigned primarily to one disabled adult
allows for the personalized assistance required by many of the adults.
The cares received include assistance in the following areas:
dressing, bathing, toileting, grooming, transferring into bed or
wheelchair, feeding and whatever else is necessary.
Facilities
easily accessible by wheelchair. The 402 acre wooded land the
camp resides on is filled with numerous paved paths to provide as much
access to wheelchair users as possible.
In
the summer, a heated swimming pool to remove the burdensome effects of
gravity. A trip to the pool for the disabled adults is a great
form of therapy and can be much more comfortable than sitting all the
time. On a hot day you can expect a bit of a traffic jam at the pool
as participants scramble for a cool dip.
Comfortable
sleeping arrangements with an attendant nearby for those who need
assistance during the night. The bathroom facilities are fully
accessible including and a large roll-in
shower.
Adaptive
sports are always popular and competitive. Participants play football,
hockey and baseball along with an occasional alternative sporting
event. The week of sports is capped off with the competitive and
prestigious annual 500 Tournament, where the winner is awarded the
coveted traveling trophy.
Besides
swimming and sports, trail rides in a tractor pulled accessible
trailer are popular for nature enthusiasts and those just wanting to
see some natural scenery. Last but not least, there are arts and
crafts programs every day. Projects range from tie-dying to building
bird houses. Participants can choose their own projects based upon the
craft supplies available.
Evening
entertainment involves programs like treasure hunts, lip sync, Comedy
Sports, game shows, a visit from the Corvette Club, casino night, and
every year the last night of camp involves a dance with a professional
DJ.
Although
there are many scheduled programs, people are free to pursue other
activities like playing cards, board games, enjoying a camp fire or
just finding a quite place to talk, think or even read a book. The
programs are all voluntary and take place in a relaxed atmosphere.
